We
can train our pets to the highest standards however they will occasionally still have accidents. Hopefully these accidents
can be treated quickly but often they are not discovered until much later. The content of pet urine will change over the life
of your pet due to factors such as diet, medication, health, age and reproductive cycles. This may mean that some stains are
not removable.
Odor
can be another unpleasant factor, especially with cats. Cat urine must be completely removed or the odor will return and be
especially noticeable in high humidity conditions. Products available at your pet and grocery stores often just mask the odor
for a time, then inevitably the odors return.
If
you are able to detect a fresh stain then it is important to treat it as quickly as possible. We recommend that you start
by blotting the area with white paper towels, getting up as much moisture as possible. Mix a solution of ¼ teaspoon of color
safe liquid laundry detergent to 2 cups of lukewarm water (Remember to always test any product first in an inconspicuous
area). Apply this solution and then blot it with white paper toweling. Rinse the affected area, blot again and repeat the
process as long as there is still some transference to the toweling or the spot continues to improve. Once this process has
been completed you may want to mix a solution of one cup white vinegar to two cups of water, retreat the area and blot it
up with white paper toweling. Apply a layer at least ½ inch thick over the spot and weigh it down with a flat, heavy, non-fading
object, then continue to change the toweling until the area is dry. Vinegar is a mild form of acid, so again check for colorfastness
in an inconspicuous area of your carpet before applying to the pet stain.
Serious
carpet damage can occur if pet urine is left unattended. Carpet fibers can be permanently damaged, moisture can weaken the
carpet layers resulting in separation, seam separation and the delaminating of the carpet’s backing materials. Worst
of all the odors almost always get worse when left untreated. We strongly recommend that you have your pet stains
treated by a professional. We use special extraction tools and a urine pre-conditioner to begin breaking up and liquefying
cat urine deposits followed by decontaminating the area using professional strength enzymes that produce bacteria
which eat organic waste matter, destroying urine odors at their source for permanent odor removal. These enzymes can also
withstand the higher temperatures associated with the hot water extraction method without losing any effectiveness.
Occasionally
urine odor cannot be removed from the carpet because the padding under the carpet has been affected and needs to be replaced.
with the underside of the carpet exposed it can be cleaned and treated at this time which is helpful. We offer this service
as well as the proffesional re-installation.
However
sometimes carpet just cannot be saved if you have a scrap of the carpet to replace the area with that may work.
This is why we strongly recommend using a carpet care professional as quickly as possible that has the proper enzymes and
power equipment and tools to get the job done before carpet replacement becomes necessary.
